Samuel Jackson, Vin Diesel, Michael Ealy, Omari Hardwick, Hill Harper & More Appear in Video Promo Campaign to Celebrate New Book "I'm a Brilliant Little Black Boy"
(Los Angeles, California - June 7, 2016) There's an oft repeated African proverb which so profoundly states that it takes a village to raise a child. In some way, it can be said that we are all composites of contributions from various individuals along the course of our spectacular journey. The stories we read, the lessons we're taught, the nurturing we receive. From childhood, how we absorb all these things and more along that aforementioned journey shapes our world view, informs our abilities and enables us to imagine possibilities. Yet even in the booming multi-billion dollar children’s book market, with sales up almost 13% in 2015, only roughly 10% of all children’s books over the past two decades contain multicultural content. And with African-American spending power estimated at $1.1 trillion dollars, conventional logic dictates that Black children are an undeserved demographic in this realm - a reality that stands to have a devastating impact over time.
With this noticeable diversity gap in the children’s publishing industry, the sizable lack of affirming messaging and positive imagery aimed at African-American children in books has not gone unnoticed. To this effect, PaperUp Publishing, (imprint of Dreamtitle Publishing, publishers of the wildly successful I’m A Pretty Little Black Girl!) presents I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy! - a new book that is poised to fill a void in a unique way that will have a lasting impact on the genre at large. With praise from celebrities such as esteemed Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, indomitable actor Samuel L. Jackson and film director John Singleton, I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy! is a breath of fresh air with the potential to positively impact and shape the impressionable minds of an entire generation of young Black boys. I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy! is the first book by Bynum’s 19-year-old son Joshua B. Drummond, and launching PaperUp Publishing, an imprint for this title series, graphic novels and sci-fi genre literature.
Launching the I'm a Brilliant Little Black Boy! book campaign, is a the first of it's kind star-studded, cell phone selfie-video with Black male celebrities voicing the hashtag: #Bbrilliant, a social media campaign featuring Vin Diesel, Samuel Jackson, Omari Hardwick, Michael Ealy, Blair Underwood, Malik Yusef, Drumma Boy and more to introduce I'm a Brilliant Little Black Boy! and plant the idea of success in the minds of boys and all readers.
Bynum says this book was an answer to a huge call. “After the I’m A Pretty Little Black Girl! books started to rapidly sell out, I got so many emails and social media requests with folks saying, “Hey, do a book for our boys!”. I told Joshua of the dozens of requests for a boys’ book. And he said, “Mom, I’ll help you write it.” And since he’s been writing since the age of 2 years old and I have taught him to write screenplays on Final Draft since he was 14, I said, ‘Do it! You’re hired! We need great books for our Black boys. There is a huge void on the shelves for books without Black boys at the center of the story. And that truly matters, that they see themselves in a happy, joyful a colorful way. They will believe what they see. Black books matter, and they matter to our society and world, as a whole.”
The book’s storyline stems from Joshua’s own reflections on cartoons from his childhood and the dearth of Black characters. “I would watch Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon,” Joshua recalls. “Every once in a while there would be that one Black character within the friend group. But for my age, there was never a whole group of just boys, like cool Black kids for the cartoons in particular. As a Black teenager, I’m aware of how race and inequality has reemerged as part of the national conversation. And I wanted to bring some positivity to the table and some light to the world.”
It wasn’t long before a sociopolitical wave of unrest and awakening had begun to dominate national conversation, further motivating Joshua to contribute to the conversation with an inspiring message for younger generations of Black boys. The result is I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy!, a wondrous story of self-discovery and sense of purpose featuring vibrant illustrations by accomplished illustrator Brian McGee (Disney, Cartoon Network). With a wealth of industry experience under his belt, including his role as storyboard artist for the Emmy Award winning television series The Walking Dead, McGee’s childhood experience wasn’t too far removed from Joshua’s. McGee’s illustrious images compliment the Mom and son co-author’s whimsical yet purposeful storyline with an incomparable ease and dexterity - enabling the book to flow effortlessly from one page to the next. The creative team members involved knew that entertainment was the golden needle and luminous thread of the project, the fabric of their rich tapestry consisted of an overarching set of goals: bolstering self esteem, instilling moral values and encouraging Black boys to explore interests and discover their hidden capabilities.
Animator and illustrator Lawrence Christmas, creative consultant for I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy, feels that the book will not only offer support and encouragement but will also present the importance of Black achievement with a sense of lightheartedness. Known for his signature work with companies such as Nickelodeon and Jim Henson Productions, Christmas sees the book as a colorful tool for modeling constructive behavior while normalizing academic interest and cooperative action. Joshua is resolute in his claim that I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy! will instill confidence and encourage little Black boys nationwide to explore their hidden talents - both creative and academic.
In 2012, Betty K. Bynum released "I'm a Pretty Little Black Girl!" filled with radiant colors, captivating characters, and age-appropriate affirmations woven into a unique tale, the NAACP nominated children's book became the #1 top seller in Amazon's African-American children's books. The book was praised by the likes of Debbie Allen, Chris Rock, Hill Harper, Loretta Devine and Ruby Dee with Essence Magazine saying, "Betty K. Bynum noticed what so many of us do when we visit children's book section in stores or online: few titles with joyous Black sheroes. So the entrepreneur decided to change the complexion of youth fiction with a multicultural series teaching girls about empowerment, self-love and self acceptance." In 2014 Bynum released "I'm a Lovely Little Latina" dedicated to girls of Latin American descent.

Bomani Jones wore a Cleveland 'Caucasians' t-shirt on ESPN
Bomani Jones is never one to shy away from a statement, and on ESPN on Thursday morning he made one by wearing a shirt that said Caucasians along with a logo looking like the Indians’ Chief Wahoo.
The statement should be clear enough: It’s easier to see how offensive something is to a race when it’s your race. White people can claim the Indians’ Chief Wahoo isn’t offensive, but when forced to look at a name and logo of Caucasians with a crude caricature, it hits home.
The t-shirts have been around a while, sold at Shelf Life Clothing, though I’m pretty sure this is the first time they’ve made their way onto ESPN.
May we add that we fuckin love the shirt? No? Yeah!

Poll: Trump holds nearly 50 percent support of Republicans nationally
By Hannah Hartig, John Lapinski and Stephanie Psyllos
With just three candidates left in the Republican primary race, Donald Trump now holds 48 percent support of registered Republicans and Republican-leaners, according to the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll. This is more than 20 points higher than his second-place competitor, Ted Cruz—who now enjoys 27 percent support. John Kasich got a boost of 2 points this week and holds third place with 18 percent support.
The question in the Republican race, however, is no longer whether Trump is the clear front-runner, but whether he will reach the magic delegate number of 1,237—and, if not, whether Republicans will support him as their party’s nominee going forward. These are big questions that have implications for the direction of the Republican Party and, ultimately, the outcome of the 2016 presidential race.
There has been intense discussion about whether the 2016 presidential primary season has caused permanent harm to the Republican Party with “establishment” candidates like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio failing to gain traction and “outsider” candidates like Trump and Ben Carson performing well.
Although it is looking more and more certain that Trump will at least hold a plurality of delegates headed into the convention, not all Republicans agree that this means he should be the party’s nominee if he fails to get a majority.
There has been intense speculation that Republican Party leaders may put forth a new candidate at the Republican convention if Trump fails to win the requisite number of delegates to secure the nomination. After Rubio’s exit from the GOP race, former House Speaker John Boehner said, “If we don’t have a nominee who can win on the first ballot, I’m for none of the above. They all had a chance to win. None of them won. So I’m for none of the above.”
A majority—57 percent—of registered Republicans and Republican-leaners disagree, however, and say that Trump should win the Republican nomination for president if he wins a plurality (but not necessarily a majority) of delegates. About a quarter (27 percent) do not think he should win the nomination and 14 percent are not sure.
When looking at this question among Republicans who support someone other than Trump, however, a small majority (53 percent) say that he should not be the party’s nominee if he fails to win a majority of delegates before the convention. This opinion varies slightly between Cruz and Kasich voters, with more Cruz supporters (32 percent) saying Trump should be the nominee than Kasich supporters (24 percent).
The other critical question for the Republican Party and, ultimately, Trump’s campaign is whether he could effectively unite his party’s voters in order to beat the Democratic candidate in November. As Hillary Clinton and Trump emerge as the serious favorites, the question becomes: Would Republicans be satisfied with a Trump vs. Clinton match-up in the fall? Which Republicans would consider ditching their party for a third-party candidate?
According to results from our latest weekly election tracking poll, just 52 percent of registered Republicans and Republican-leaners would be satisfied with a choice between Clinton and Trump on the general election ballot. Thirty percent say they would seriously consider a voting for a third party candidate.
Of course, the primary has not yet been decided for either party and there are several months remaining until voters have to make their decision in the general election. Satisfaction with candidate choices will almost certainly vary depending on the remaining primaries as well as the months of campaigning left for any potential candidate. One thing is certain, however – a number of hurdles remain for any Republican candidate looking ahead to the general election this fall.
The NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll was conducted online March 21 through March 27, 2016 among a national sample of 6,521adults aged 18 and over, including 5,741 who say they are registered to vote. Respondents for this non-probability survey were selected from the nearly three million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day. Results have an error estimate of plus or minus 1.7 percentage points. For full results and methodology for this weekly tracking poll, please click here.

Top Arab-American city backs Jewish socialist, man for Muslim ban
By Amanda Sakuma
Dearborn, Michigan — home to the largest Arab-American enclave in the country — resoundingly backed both the first major Jewish candidate to run for president, and a reality TV celebrity infamous for his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
Overall, Michigan voters were full of surprises in its presidential primary Tuesday night, handing an upset victory to Bernie Sanders and launching Donald Trump to win three states throughout the night. The pair of wins keep alive a presidential contest already chock-full of unpredictable turns, keeping Sanders in the race while many had already counted him out, and setting up Trump perilously close to running away with the Republican nomination.
The most fascinating results came out of Dearborn, where about 41 percent of voters are Arab-American. Sanders claimed an uncontested lead there with 59 percent of the vote to Hillary Clinton’s 39 percent.
Sanders had focused much of his campaigning efforts in Dearborn, holding events there twice over the last month to blast Clinton for her role in Libya’s regime change and her record on trade. Over that timehe released a radio ad in Arabic that also condemned his Republican opponents and cast himself as a voice of inclusion. And in his final swing through Michigan on Monday night, Sanders told the crowd that he had met with Arab-American leaders and vowed that Trump and his supporters were not going prevail in scapegoating minority communities.
“We are going to end bigotry in this country once and for all,” Sanders said during the rally.
Even more surprising were Trump’s results on the Republican side. There he came ahead of runner-up John Kasich by roughly 10 points, with 39 percent to the Ohio governor’s 29 percent.
The candidate split comes amid a heightened climate of Islamophobia as the Arab-American community has been forced to shoulder much of the public’s anxiety toward terror groups abroad and fear of more attacks. Muslim leaders have reported a number of potential hate crimes and attacks against the community throughout the U.S.
And yet, in a state with a deep history of acceptance toward the Arab community, Michigan Republicans reflected the feelings shared by an astounding majority of GOP voters – they support Trump’s plan to temporarily ban Muslims, who are not U.S. citizens, from entering the country.
According to exit polls, 63 percent of Republican voters supported the proposal, 46 percent of which were Trump supporters, compared to 32 percent who said they were opposed.

The Rev. Westley West acquitted of charges stemming from protest
By Jessica AndersonContact Reporter
The Baltimore Sun
The Baltimore Sun
The Rev. Westley West, a Baltimore pastor running for City Council, was acquitted on Wednesday of charges stemming from a protest during a court hearing for the officers charged in the Freddie Gray case in September.
Jurors found West, 27, not guilty of disturbance of the peace and failure to obey law enforcement, said his attorney Donald Wright. Prosecutors dropped charges of attempting to incite a riot, malicious destruction of property, disorderly conduct, and false imprisonment before the trial, Wright said.
"We are very pleased with the result," Wright said. He said jurors returned a verdict in about 15 minutes. He called the verdict "a pretty harsh rebuke of the police action in this case and the entire prosecution."
West and others were protesting during a September pre-trial hearing to determine if the trials of the six officers charged in the arrest and death of Gray should be moved outside the city. Judge Barry Williams denied the defense motion to move the proceedings.
West was arrested on Sept. 9 at his church, Faith Empowered Ministries in West Baltimore. West and his attorney have questioned the timing of the arrest. They said it came a week after he led a brief protest from the downtown courthouse to the Inner Harbor, where police said he blocked traffic on Pratt Street, as he carried a megaphone.
Wright said police could have handled the matter differently, choosing to engage West in conversation.
"It would be nice if we had a police department who came in with a handshake and an open mind addressing some of these issues," Wright said. Instead, he said West was treated like a threat.
A spokesman with the police department declined to comment
West is seeking the Democratic nomination for the City Council seat currently held by Nick Mosby, who is running for mayor.
West also faces theft charges in Baltimore County, where police allege he used bank account and routing information to steal more than $700 from an Owings Mills company where he briefly worked as a truck driver. West has maintained his innocence. His trial in that case is scheduled for April 19.
West plans to hold a news conference outside City Hall Wednesday afternoon to "demand that Baltimore city police officers and judiciary system clean up their act of stereotyping and racial profiling," he said in a statement.

Clinton calls Sanders comment a ‘low blow’
By Alex Seitz-Wald
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that it was a “low blow” for rival Bernie Sanders to say she is a progressive only “some days,” even as Sanders’ campaign defends the comment.
Speaking at an event in Derry, New Hampshire Wednesday morning, Clinton rattled off a list of progressive issues she’s worked on, from health care reform to fighting the privatization of Social Security. “If it’s about our records, hey, I’m gonna win by a landslide,” Clinton said.
The former secretary of state added that she was “disappointed” by Sanders’s comment, which he made the day earlier while campaigning in the Granite State. Asked by MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt if Clinton is a progressive, Sanders replied, “Some days, yeah…except when she announces that she is a proud moderate. And then I guess she’s not a progressive.”
The Clinton campaign quickly and aggressively fired back, expressing disappointment in the senator’s comments.
The presidential campaign: Hillary Clinton
Clinton arguably boasts experience in government unparalleled by anyone in the presidential field — but that has also made her a high-profile target for attack.
“You’re progressive enough, Hillary,” Clinton spokesperson Jennifer Palmieri said on Twitter, referencing a controversial comment Barack Obama made during a similar period between the Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Democratic primary in 2008 when he said she was “likable enough.”
That remark eight years ago was thought to have helped inspire sympathy for Clinton, who came back from a significant polling deficit to win New Hampshire.
Sanders’s top strategist Tad Devine defended his candidate to MSNBC, saying Sanders’s comment was no mistake because Clinton herself said in September that she is a moderate.
“You know, I get accused of being kind of moderate, center. I plead guilty,” Clinton said last year in Columbus, Ohio. Clinton was referring to an attempt to find a compromise with President George W. Bush over tax cuts when she was in the Senate.
Devine said Sanders “did not impose those words on her, those words came out of her mouth.” “If she wants to renounce that statement, or somehow disavow it,” Devine added, that would change things.
The strategist pointed to a list of issues where he said Clinton was not progressive, including her stance on the death penalty and on the Syrian no-fly zone. “I could go on for a while,” he said as he mentioned issues. “No, I don’t think Bernie made a mistake by pointing out that Sec. Clinton in this campaign – not 20 years ago – said she gets accused to being moderate and centrist and pledged guilty to that claim,” he concluded.
Both campaigns seem to think this is a winning issue for them. For Clinton, it’s an excuse to talk about her progressive record while also promoting the idea that Sanders is being unfairly harsh. For Sanders, whose campaign tweeted out video of the exchange Wednesday, it may play well with his support base, which includes many who think Clinton is not progressive enough.
The exchange comes just a day before MSNBC’s New Hampshire debate, where the two candidates will face-off one-on-one for the first time in the final days before New Hampshire’s primary.

Trump campaign manager: ‘Megyn Kelly is totally obsessed with Mr. Trump’
By Adam Howard
Donald Trump’s latest feud with the Fox News cable network escalated once again on Wednesday morning, when the GOP front-runner’s campaign manager claimed that upcoming debate moderator Megyn Kelly is “obsessed” with bringing down the candidate.
For the past few days, Trump has oscillated over whether or not to appear in a GOP presidential debate being aired on the network Thursday, ultimately deciding not to participate. Trump has claimed repeatedly that Fox News, and Kelly specifically, have covered his campaign unfairly. Fox has responded with astinging statement which suggested that “a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”
“Sooner or later Donald Trump, even if he’s president, is going to have to learn that he doesn’t get to pick the journalists—we’re very surprised he’s willing to show that much fear about being questioned by Megyn Kelly,” they said in another statement aimed at Trump.
Trump called the statements “wiseguy press releases” and has said he doesn’t think Kelly is “professional at all” and “not a very talented person.”
“They should get competent reporters, they shouldn’t use somebody like her,” Trump said during a phone interview on “Good Morning America.” Since Trump’s decision not to appear, he has been dinged by his GOP rivals and challenged to a one-on-one debate by 2016 candidate Sen. Ted Cruz.
“At the end of the day, Mr. Trump is going to have the last laugh,” Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said during a Wednesday appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” In that same interview Lewandowski said it is unlikely that Trump will reverse course and join his fellow Republicans on stage.
“I mean, what you have with Mr. Trump is you have a clear leader, a person who, he said it best, is not going to be toyed with. A person who understands when a bad deal is in front of him and is ready to walk away from a bad deal, something that this country should be able to do. And I just don’t see any way where Fox is going to have a successful debate now when you got the clear GOP front-runner who’s decided to walk away from this debate because he can’t be treated fairly on the debate stage, and you got a network that’s going to make news not about what they’re going to ask the candidates about the policy issues but about personal attacks,” said Lewandowski.
Lewandowski said “this isn’t about Megyn Kelly at all,” even though he previously mentioned that she has “done show after show about why the media shouldn’t be having him on television.” He said the issue was instead moderators in general making themselves the focal point, rather than the candidates, citing thecontentious CNBC GOP debate as the example.
“They go out of their way I think sometimes at Fox to put left-wing liberals on to make their own points because they can’t find conservatives to do it. Or they find people who want to attack Mr. Trump personally,” said Lewandowski.
Trump has floated the possibility of boycotting GOP debates in the past, but has always found his way to the stage during prime-time. His battles with Fox News began at the first official top-tier GOP debate, where Kelly challenged Trump on his history of making sexist remarks about women. After a testy exchange, Trump later claimed Kelly was bleeding out of her “whatever” when she confronted him. Trump has insisted he meant her nose and ears, while many speculated the remark was a reference to Kelly’s gender and menstruation.
After some social media broadsides, Trump appeared to make peace with Fox News, appearing on “The O’Reilly Factor” and “Fox and Friends” for largely cordial exchanges. In September of last year, he turned against the network again, trolling them on social media and again calling into question Kelly’s credentials. What’s different this time around is Trump has started to personally attack the network’s powerful chairman, Roger Ailes, who has professed to be friendly with in the past.
The Trump campaign has reportedly suggested that only Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire media mogul who owns Fox can step in and resolve the conflict. “Fox is going have a 20 or 25 million person debate, but without Mr. Trump’s participation, I think they may have a one or two million person debate,” opined Lewandowski on “Morning Joe.”
