The stars have aligned to bring us the next Diva to revive the remnants of R&B. There is a slew of artists that are making strides to save our precious genre of music and this angel is emerging from the horizon.
We've had the honor to sit down with her to bring you the first up-close exclusive. This is so that you can brace yourself for the wave when it hits like a tsunami. That's the level of energy we're dealing with here. Let's get right to it!
ACM: What up good people, we are glad that you are logged in to Apex Coture Magazine. Of course we have a very special guest in the building for you guys tonight. and I'm going to leave it up to her to introduce herself.
JP: Heyy wassup I’m Jourdin Pauline
ACM: So tell us a little bit about yourself tell us where you're from, where you grew up at and what era you grew up in.
JP: Well originally I’m from Georgetown Guyana. I came to the US when I was about 5 or 6 and I grew up in South Central. I’m from a little bit of everywhere in LA.
ACM: When did you know that you had this gift for writing music in such a prolific manner that it'd make you want to pursue a career?
JP: I’ve dreamt of this my whole life. My mom is a manager so I’ve always been an industry baby. I realized this is something I really wanted when I was 4. I literally thought I was BeyoncΓ© or Aaliyah as a child lol. I have literally dozens of songwriting books from when I was like 8 til now. So crazy to see how far I’ve come.
ACM: You have quite an extensive resume and I must say I'm very impressed. You've co-written songs that have been featured on major television shows like Love & Hip Hop and Keeping Up with the Kardashians a couple. Tell us about those and the others that you wrote for.
JP: Well thank you. I started with Disney and Nickelodeon writing songs for there top shows and I just started to venture out and be in writing sessions with some of the biggest people. I never thought I’d be in the same room working with them. God is so good. I have so much more in store for everyone and I can’t wait to show everyone.
ACM: That's some good stuff to have on your credentials. How did those deals come about?
JP: It came from my mom, to be honest. Like one day I was in the studio with her, she had to bring me because she couldn’t find a babysitter lol. I remember everyone was creating a song and I came up with a really good idea and it shocked everyone and ever since then everyone wanted me around because I would just think of stuff no one else would.
ACM: You've also worked with some heavy-hitting producers like Donald 'XL' Robertson, Brian 'Killa B' Bates and more. Speak about those experiences, what they did for you, and who else you had a chance to work with.
JP: OMG! I’m so grateful for them they really inspire and push me every time I’m around them. The love and belief they have for me make me so grateful. There were times no one took me seriously because my mom is a manager and no one wanted to work on my own music (not for others) and Killa B took a chance. So did Donald. Love those guys. I’ve been working with so many talented artists recently. My musical soul mate currently is the amazing songwriter Pendrick Lamar. He is someone who really is important in my musical career as well.
ACM: Now that you're going full fledge with your career in R&B, what would your contribution be and how do you plan to apply it to enhance the culture?
JP: Honestly I’m all about empowerment for women and acceptance of SELF. No one's perfect and I just really wanna be the voice to say edgy shit with true feelings that everyone else is afraid to say even though our generation is so lawless. Everyone is glorifying the wrong thing and women tend to be put down a lot so I’m here to show everyone that we need to rise and we are important too.
ACM: I'm sure you know the history of R&B through the decades of evolution from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s till now. What do you think of the state of R&B today?
JP: OMG, R&B is so slept on nowadays. My girl EllaMaii is really bringing it back to life. So am I lol. That’s the plan. There's so many amazing R&B artist out right now that needs recognition but they will eventually
ACM: Who are some of your major influences in the industry be it hip-hop or R&B?
JP: Ahhh my favorite topic!!! I’m obsessed with PRINCE like omg if I could be half of him I’d take over forreal. Minnie Riperton is someone I truly adore. Her fearlessness in music is truly iconic! Janet Jackson, whew child don’t get me started on that Queen. She’s really like my alter ego. No one compares to her. And AALIYAH OMFG I've been IN LOVE with that beautiful soul/ women my whole damn life. What an iconic legend. Jay Z is someone I adore also that’s why my nickname is also Jigga π€ͺthe list could go on and on honestly I love everyone.
ACM: I know there are artists in the industry that you admire that you would love to work with. Who might they be?
JP: Ummmm DRAKE DUHHHHH lol. Pharrell. That’s a long list too but I’ll come back to that later
ACM: Are you into politics? If so you feel about our current political climate?
JP: No comment lol. I’m all about peace love, equality and treating people better.
ACM: Cool let's switch it up. Let's talk about this dope new single entitled 'Trash' #TTWNA. And it is dope. I've been bangin it for the past few days (Don't worry guys, we've embedded it so that you can stream it and hear it for yourself). The production is crazily crisp and you are honed in on the concept throughout the record. Is this record based on a true story? Or just the combustion life's experiences?
JP: Omg awww thank youuuu! Honestly, this song is based on a true ass story. I got my heart broken and so did my sister literally at the same time lol. So I went to the studio fed up and made this Lolol.
ACM: Who's the producer of this record?
JP: Go Grizzly!!!! Love him so much! Can’t wait to work with him some more.
ACM: How is the record doing right now?
JP: AMAZING! I’m so happy everyone is supporting it! It’s literally a dream come true.
ACM: Where can the people find the record?
JP: EVERYWHEREEE! I’ll be dropping video really soon. Also, it’s on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, and Tidal.
