4th Annual Stop Killing Us (SKU) march/walk from Philadelphia to Washington, DC.

I am on the next to the final day of the march that began June 5th from Philadelphia Police Department headquarters to address the ongoing police brutality that the Stop Killing Us (SKU) organization has been marching and bringing to the attention of lawmakers in DC for the past four years. Of course, with the untimely death of George Floyd, it seems to have more support and recognition than in the past three years. But this has also been the most disappointing of the past marches and I would like to share why.

Stop killing each other with this virus!

Anything that threatens the life and well being of black people, specifically, I am going to protest it. Gun violence, police brutality, homelessness, etc. But how do I protest the ignorance of black people as it pertains to the coronavirus in our communities? For some reason, we seem to feel that we are immune from its effects, even as we see people like Actor Idris Elba and other black celebrities succumb to it. In addition, we are still keeping the senseless rampage of homicides in our communities despite being ordered to remain off the streets except in certain cases.

I am on my third Stop Killing Us (SKU) march from Philadelphia, Pa. to Washington, DC to address community violence and police brutality. As a result, some people seem to think I know how to solve these issues. If I did I wouldn’t be on my third one! But I have thought about it endlessly and would like to share my thoughts.

I believe I’ve been an activist all of my life. From the day my Catholic school teacher hit my hands with a pointer stick and I told my mom I would never go back to St Columbus School in North Philly, I knew I wanted to change things and how they affected me. Even when I graffitied the walls of Philly growing up as a youngster I knew that was an act of defiance against the status quo. And when I was placed in the House of Umoja, a boys home in Philly and became an integral part as a young man to stop the gang wars that were prevalent at the time, I saw that I could be a vehicle for change Entering the Marine Corps in 1975, I could see the reason why it was the last branch to allow blacks and their shared training with white recruits.

Why should we black people care about the immigrant situation?
If you are a believer in God (Allah), or any other name you refer to a higher power as I must say I’m surprised you’re asking that question. If you’re not then I guess you have no moral or religious obligation to care about them or anyone else. I will explain why we may want to reconsider why we should help them.
I recently traveled to Tijuana, Mexico to assist in the migrant caravan issue. My purpose was to provide supplies and necessities that they may need but may not be afforded to them. These caravans consist mainly of those from South American countries, but also from African countries. They traveled northward in the hopes of seeking asylum from their countries to the United States.

I am returning to my column after a hiatus which has had me involved in many things in many places. My last column was during the STOP KILLING US (SKU) march from Philly to DC. this past August. I’ve recently returned from Hoover, Alabama where I supported those asking for transparency in the killing of Emantic Bradford Jr. We are demanding that they release the video of his killing, of which he was first identified as a suspect in a shooting that happened while he was in the mall. They later realized he was not the suspect but yet he was shot from behind and killed by a police officer working security. In my time there I have seen the tactics used by the Hoover police department firsthand.

As the STOP KILLING US (SKU) march from Vineland, New Jersey covering over 150 miles comes to an end tomorrow in front of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, DC. I would like to address a main controversial topic. Who is truly holding Black America back? I would like to say first and foremost that until we accept that we are better than we show, then we are the first offenders of this.

I just saw a black woman on CNN say that she is comfortable with President Trump calling Omarosa a dog. Is this where we are today? Do we actually accept people calling our women dogs and equating it with the same name calling of someone else? What is wrong with us?

First and foremost, because we did not stand up to them and their racist and deadly actions in Charlottesville, VA last year. Black people were very minimal in numbers there and it was recognized by them, believe me.

Activism, as displayed by marching and/ or rallies, seem to be very much in question lately. Its effects seem to be unrealized even though we see the changes and accountability at times to some extent in the police killings. Additionally, it’s been said that activism is the voice of the voiceless, and we are being heard.
