Reuben Reuel is the inspired designer behind Demestiks New York. The New York City based label was launched in 2012. Reuben’s designs pay tribute to vintage silhouettes, and incorporate an element of modernism through the unique fabrics he uses. These fabrics play an important role in the brand’s aesthetics, as it is “finding fabrics that inspire creativity” which inform Reuben’s designs.

1. Where are you originally from?
I am originally from Virginia Beach, VA
2. What do you love about New York City?
I love the energy of New York City. There is a sense of drive in every individual here.
3. What path did you take to get to where you are today?
I studied fashion design since I was in high school and I continued in that path ever since. I just trusted that God would guide me in the right direction if I stayed focused.
4. Did you always know what you wanted to do?
I always knew I would work a job in the art world. I’ve always had a love for art and fashion and beauty in general so I am not surprised this is my career.
5. What’s your typical day like?
Busy (haha). Generally I work a lot and put a lot of focus on my brand. I do keep to myself though to take my mind away from work.
6. Perks of your job?
One of the greatest perks in doing what I do is making people feel good about how they look. When I get customer feedback it’s always great to read how designs bring them joy and how many compliments they receive.
7. Best moment career-wise?
The best moment in my career was when I realized that I can live off of creating clothes; the moment when it hit me that I have my own business and I can survive on my own business was a dream come true
8. What is something that inspires you?
I am inspired by color, vintage silhouettes, and women. I design clothing that women want to wear, clothes that make women feel feminine and beautiful.
9. If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive, who would it be?
Jesus. Would love to hear his story from a personal point of view.
10. Three words that best describe you?
Tenacious, humble, and creative
11. What is something that makes you nostalgic?
My designs make me somewhat nostalgic. I love designing clothes reminiscent of the 60s – 80s.
12. Name one outfit that is timeless to you?
Anything with a peplum or full skirt. These silhouettes never go out of style.
13. What is your favorite item in your wardrobe right now?
An over-sized semi sheer, draped cotton/linen blend top that I made years ago. It is my go to shirt for comfort and style.
14. If something happened and you could only save one item from your wardrobe what would it be?
I would save my Givenchy brogue sneaker boots. They are rare and I know I would never find them again.
15. What are you motivated by?
I am motivated by my love to create. Fashion and style has always had an impact on my life. I need to create to survive.
16. What advice would you give to someone trying to pursue a similar career path as you?
Stay humble and keep God first in whatever you do.
